Lead patination oil is a specialised surface treatment used to protect newly installed rolled lead sheet from forming lead carbonate salts – commonly referred to as white staining. It is essential that it is applied when installing new leadwork, especially when working near porous materials like stone, brick or tile. Patination oil must be applied on the day of installation (preferably out of direct sunlight).
Patination oil is a mix of White spirit [solvent base], soya alkyd resin [for bonding], silica and metallic soaps [to aid in film formation] and hydrophobic agents to resist water. These can separate in the tin which it is why it is vitally important to shake the container vigorously for two minutes before application.
Small container - 0.5 litre
Large container – 1.0 litre
Uses/benefit:
- Prevents white carbonate staining that will be unsightly on adjacent surfaces
- Promotes uniform patina across the lead surface for a consistent finish
- Repels moisture during the critical early weathering phase
